Who permits work in Prince George's County
| Road or topic | Who handles it | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| County roads | Prince George's County Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) | Street Construction, Special Utility and Maintenance Utility permits. Most are filed in Momentum |
| Maintenance of traffic plans | DPIE Traffic Engineering | Reviews maintenance of traffic plans against the Maryland MUTCD |
| State roads | MDOT SHA District 3, Greenbelt (Prince George's and Montgomery) | Traffic Control Permit for all work in SHA right of way |
| City of Bowie streets | Bowie Public Works | Right of Way Permit and Utility Permit |
On state roads, MDOT SHA requires a Traffic Control Permit for all work in its right of way, and setups follow the MD 104 Temporary Traffic Control sheets in the SHA Book of Standards and the Maryland MUTCD. SHA utility permits limit weekday lane closures to 9 AM to 3 PM and 9 PM to 5 AM unless the permit says otherwise.
Local rules to plan around
- DPIE allows no work in the morning peak (6 to 8:30 AM) or evening peak (4 to 6:30 PM).
- Work outside 9 AM to 3 PM needs an extended hours request. Weekend work is typically approved from 10 AM to 5 PM.
Office names, forms and lead times change. Confirm the current rules with the agency before you apply.
